KL CAR FREE MORNING GETS RAPID KL BOOST

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 August – Rapid Rail, the operator of Rapid KL’s LRT, monorail and MRT services, has come in support of the hugely-popular KL Car Free Morning programme by allowing full size bicycles on the LRT on the days of the event.

On other days, Rapid KL’s LRT networks – LRT Ampang Line, LRT Sri Petaling Line and LRT Kelana Jaya Line – allow only foldable bikes during its off-peak hours. Foldable bikes are also allowed on all days on Rapid KL Monorail Line, the Bus Rapid Transit – Sunway Line and the MRT Sungai Buloh – Kajang Line outside the peak hours.

“While we are allowing the full size bicycles to be carried into LRT trains on dedicated Sundays for the KL Car Free Morning programme, we would like to remind that there are rules and regulations that they need to follow. Most important is for the cyclists to exercise caution and discretion while bringing in their bikes into the trains.

“We need to ensure the safety and the comfort of the other commuters as well. If the trains are packed, please refrain from forcing the bikes into the trains. The cyclists also need to enter the trains from specific doors at the stations. For Kelana Jaya Line, they can only board the four-car trains; and not the two-car trains,” said Rapid Rail CEO, Dato’ Ir. Zohari Sulaiman.

Speaking at the roll-out of the ‘Bike & Ride’ programme at Bandaraya LRT Station here today, Zohari said that Rapid KL would follow closely the dates fixed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall under the programme in allowing the non-foldable bicycles on the trains.

“We sincerely hope that cyclists will respond responsibly to these requirements under the programme. If the response is good, we are ready to extend further the programme further as we at Rapid KL are strong supporters of a healthy lifestyle amongst Malaysians,” he added.

The full guidelines in Bringing Bikes On-Board Trains are as follows:

  • Non-foldable and foldable bikes are permitted. The length and the height should be no more than 200cm long and 120cm high.
  • Cyclists under the age of 12 must be accompanied by adults when bringing permitted bike types onto the train.
  • Bikes should be safely attended by the cyclists at all times.
  • Cyclists shall enter and exit through the wide-aisle gate.
  • When boarding or leaving the train, cyclists are reminded to use extreme caution to avoid bumping into other passengers.
  • Cyclists shall allow other passengers to board and exit the train first.
  • Priority to use the elevators shall be given to people with disabilities.
  • Every passenger is allowed to carry one permitted bike at any time.
  • Cyclists with non-foldable bikes must wait by the specified doors, as shown behind (yellow boxes)
  • Cycling is strictly prohibited inside the trains and stations at all times.
  • Bikes must be clean and free from mud and grease.
  • Cyclists will be held responsible for any damage caused to Rapid KL.
  • Rapid KL has the authority to refuse entry to passenger with permitted bike if it may cause inconvenience to other passengers or affecting train operations.

While supporting City Hall’s KL CarFree Morning programme to promote its ‘Go Green & Stay Healthy’ aspirations, Zohari said that Rapid Rail’s ‘Bike & Ride’ programme was also aimed at expanding its ridership target segment in wooing the cycling community and the scope of Rapid Rail’s product services.

“We also hope that the programme would help to further enhance the ’first mile & last mile’ connectivity and contribute to efforts in increasing the public transport modal share, which is targeted at 40 percent by 2030,” he added.
